I don't feel like programming much: what's a good strategy game to play?

Hmm, have you tried AoC? :headbash:

Are we talking old or new? Computer or board game?
Old PC game: Starfleet Command
Any version of Madden football for the Playstation/2/3
MinionsOfMirth Shareware/freeware for the Mac
Board game: Robo Rally

Also check out: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=3473 There's a link there that talks about 3 strategy games. I've seen the oil game before but never played it. :-( It sounds like it could be fun.

PC game! Not too new, but not too old either. Starfleet Command looks pretty interesting!?

Starfleet Command had four editions, I, II, III & IV. I like first one (oldest) the best but most people liked III the best. You pilot a spaceship, (Star Trek Universe) in duels, fleet action, base assaults and other scenarios. AI has 3 levels of difficulty. You can play against other players too, although the game is so old I don't know if there are any sites still hosting it. You need to manager the resources of the ship, power, shields, weapons, speed, ECM, ECCM, transporters, tractors, etc. You then develop tactics to to best meet the needs of each ship or race of of the ships. Optimal firing ranges, speeds, combat maneuvering, etc. It's pretty intense and a lot of fun.

You could also try Alpha Centauri. I haven't played any new or semi new PC games so perhaps someone else recommend something that's not so old. :-)

where is the Age of Empires love here? (# 2 of course) its fun, even if you do have to go 3 on 1 to get a challenge out of the computer.

Actually, I looked at Alpha Centauri and it looked quite interesting! I could definitely go for that, although, it looks very similar to Civilization? No?

Yep, Age of Empires is a definite winner! Played that.

I just played the demo for Supreme Commander 2 last night and I was having fun with it. :^^: Maybe give that a try?

I also recommend -
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II.
R.U.S.E (Open beta is still available on steam for the next 10 days)

and then there's a whole slew of Paradox Entertainment games that I love.

Crusader Kings (has some irritating flaws but is otherwise intrigueing)
Europa Universalis III
Hearts of Iron III

If you have a PS2 then I recommend Front Mission 4.

If you happen to have a PS3 then I very, very highly recommend the game Valkyria Chronicles. (I find myself continually being drawn back to this game whenever they release downloadable content missions. I was glued to it for weeks when it first came out.)

Yes they are. Sid Meier is the game designer for both Alpha Centauri and Civilization. So if you like Civilization you should also like Alpha Centauri.

I played the original Star Fleet Battles using paper and dice. It was a true classic, using a lot of the basic mechanics of naval miniatures applied to Star Fleet ships. Later they came out with a boardgame version and called it Star Fleet Command. The (much) later computer game was based on the former but took the name from the latter. I played the first one and liked it well enough, but never bothered with any of the sequels.

Yes, I guess I should have mentioned that but I didn't think there was much interest in the board game. The four versions of the PC game "Starfleet Command" is based upon the board game "Starfleet Battles". Starfleet Battles currently has a base game, an advance game then then some 40-50 modules or expansions. A few years ago the base game, advance game and most of the modules if not all of them have come out in a lite version called Federation Commander. Federation Commander has a couple of interesting features to it that gives the game a more simple look and feel to the game. However, it seems to have lost certain elements that makes Starfleet battles more fun to play, IMO. There is also the original, old game "Federation Command" which is designed for fleet action on a galactic scale. I have never played this game but a friend of mine has. I was told it takes nearly a weekend to just set the game up and then months to play it. He's only played it once but still has it sitting on this bookshelf.

I haven't played Starcraft in like a decade. Although, I've been wanting to give the board game version a try.

Didn't care much for Starcraft 1 or 2.

I was more into C&C.

I've been playing Orion's Belt. As the name implies, it's a space opera that goes on forever. Its features are

  • Browser based and Free to Play, enhancements can be purchased with in-game currency
  • Enhancements are balanced so as to avoid giving players using them reasonable but not overwhelming advantage
  • Continuous auctions where in-game currency can be spent or earned.
  • Active community of friendly players. Estimate several hundered active at any given time.
  • Choose commanders from three races, each with unique ships and ultimate weapons.
  • Play 1-3 commanders each of which can command up to 10 fleets.
  • Commanders may be chosen from any combination of races
  • Each commander may control 5-13 planets
  • Thousands of planets to conquer or raid in a large universe.
  • Solo play as a raiding pirate, trader or bounty hunter
  • Group strategy featuring a capture-the-flag-type team (alliance) play.
  • Alliances create their own goals and objectives.
  • Safe Haven for Noobs
  • Simple mining based economy
  • Best of all: turn-based, thought provoking battles played on a checker board
  • Continuous Ladder and Elimination tournaments on the battle board.

Addictive and fun, check it out at
